Eco Fun: Stupid Creatures

Posted on 16 October 2009 by KatieTheMonkey

StupidCreatures2If your dryer is like mine it likes to eat socks.  The only sacrifice it accepts however is one sock from each pair and so I inevitably end up with a bunch of random socks from who-knows-when all rolled up at the bottom of my dresser.  If you’re having sentimental pangs for these items of leftover clothing, I have found the thing for you!  There is a gentleman named John Murphy who will take your socks (and other kinds of fabric) and reuse them to create your very own Stupid Creature.  The little custom sock monsters on his page are incredibly cute, and although they are expensive ($45 I think), it is a fun way to preserve something that might be oddly dear to your heart.  Here is the link for his Ordering FAQ with extremely detailed answers to any questions that you might have.StupidCreatures1

If you’re feeling a cramp on your wallet that makes you feel disinclined to spend the dough, don’t worry!  John Murphy has also written several  books on his craft so you can enjoy making your own sock monsters in the privacy of your own home and budget.

Enjoy!

Peeing in Your Shower = Saving Water

Posted on 23 September 2009 by Tasha

Oh yeah, totally!

Calvin Peeing decal_12

How gross? Hey, it’s no more disgusting than using public restrooms and actually, urine is sterile! It may smell funny or look strange, and definitely NEVER invite anyone to shower with you until after you have peed, but going in the shower can save our water. It can also save you money on energy and money on your water bill.  peeps pee in shower

If it seems strange to you at first, just grab a bottle of bodywash or conditioner, open the lid, and pump the bottle a few times in front of your face to get a good whiff of flowers while you do your deed.

After a few times of this water conservation practice your body will become conditioned to relieve itself anytime you get in the shower. Like clockwork.

Do I sound like I have experience in this? That’s because I do.

Little known secret (maybe well known), I have used this technique for years now. Only now that I have been focused on water conservation has it become apparent to me that this is used and encouraged by many enviro groups.   michael jordan pee in shower

Think of the gallons you can save! Think of the trees you save by using less T.P.!

In Brazil, an environmental group urges people to use this technique. They suggest to “Pee in the shower! Save the Atlantic rainforest!”

I’m sure this is new to many people and can seem extreme, but if you have ever peed in the woods then you will see that this is the same thing! Only difference is; you can rinse.

Remember: yellow is the new green!

So, if it’s yellow keep it mellow. But, if it’s brown, flush it down!

See? Saving water can be fun and adventurous!

Oh, and if you need more encouragement, check out this video:

Time Magazine says Eco-Crazy. I say Eco-Awesome! How about you?

Posted on 12 September 2009 by KatieTheMonkey

Today I found this article that had been published in Time Magazine called “Top Ten Odd Environmental Ideas”.  I don’t know when it was published as I could not find the date, but I do believe that it was sometime early in 2009.  This article basically pokes fun at some eco-inovations in a highly sarcastic manner, and while I’m all for sarcasm, I read the article in its entirety and thought some of the items were actually pretty freaking cool!  Like a dance floor on springs where the action of the dancers provides the electricity for the club.  Now, reusable toilet wipes I will approach with some trepidation, but a staple-less stapler?  Doesn’t sound crazy at all.

I think I agree with Mickey Z. at Planet Green.  In his review of the article, he states “here’s my definition of eco crazy: paving half the planet and soaking the other half in pesticides. A little worse than reusable toilet wipes, huh?”

You be the judge:

Population Control: “Earth vs. Babies”

Posted on 30 August 2009 by KatieTheMonkey

I think there is little doubt that human overcrowding on the Earth is having a negative impact on the environment.  Many solutions have been offered…some stranger than others.

Here is a little article I found by a man named David Thompson that talks about the impact on the environment that would occur if couples chose to have one less child.  This article quotes several scientists, including one who thinks something should be put in the water to make people sterile!  Don’t take my word for it, read it yourself:

Solar Powered Bra Saves the World!

Posted on 25 August 2009 by KatieTheMonkey

This is by no means a new article, but with everything in stores seeming to be termed organic or eco-friendly these days, it’s a bit amusing to find people working hard to come up with a product that’s really not very practical.  The funniest part of this article to me is how the spokewoman of the company that designed the bra stated that although the bra would not be in stores because people couldn’t wear anything over it, it was still an example of how lingerie could save the planet!  Here is the article and video:

Solar bra brings conservation closer to the heart

*Warning: there is an annoying little ad that pops up when you first go to this site.  Sorry!  Just close it as soon as possible.  It’s worth it.
